hunt + gather
There are many thriving + diverse small businesses making their mark along Tasmania’s east coast. Below are a few of our favourites for a relaxed meal, excellent coffee, wine, gin and hunt + gather provisions close by The Burrows.
the waterloo inn
Perched atop the dunes of Waterloo Point in Swansea, The Waterloo Inn is a quiet icon of Tasmania’s east coast.
Its classic ground-floor dining room carries the ease of days gone by: a cosy refuge inside, sun-soaked patio outside, all framed by sweeping views across the water to the Freycinet peninsula.
Our favourite for a lazy long lunch or dinner, open every weekend.
mayfield estate
Since 1969, two generations of the Dunbabin family have run Mayfield, farming sheep for wool in one of the world’s most renowned super-fine wool growing regions.
The Cellar Door is situated to make the most of the magnificent views: facing the bays dramatic entrance at Schouten Passage, looking north as far as the golden strand of Dolphin Sands and south to Majestic Maria Island and the Tasman Sea.
Mayfield offer platters on Mondays and Fridays and delicious pizzas on the weekends.
Sharing a bottle of their sparkling, a glass or two of pinot or a indulging in a cocktail featuring Mayfield’s stunning “Sophia” gin on the deck overlooking the bay is hard to beat.
GALA ESTATE
We absolutely love Gala Estate and their cellar door is such a warm and wonderful experience!
Located in Cranbrook, 2 hours from Hobart along Tasmania’s stunning ‘Great Eastern Drive’ Open 10am - 4pm daily, September - may. Gala Estate Vineyard sits at the crossroads of history and innovation, presenting Tasmanian wines that are infused with a sense of place and time.
Now run by the seventh generation of the Amos family, it is a multi-faceted business that produces not only award-winning wines, but also operates as a fully functioning sheep farm.
cake + honey
Home style baking at it’s best - delicious treats, both sweet and savoury … think greens pie, egg, bacon + haloumi rolls, using locally sourced seasonal produce and making excellent coffee (using Straight Up Roasters, another of our favourites) and selling her partner Rob’s amazing Wild Hives Honey.
In pop up mode at 18 Franklin Street + open Wednesday - Saturday from 7:30am til 12:30pm
TIP - make sure to get in early to avoid disappointment, Michaela often sells out!
MELSHELL OYSTERS
The Melrose family have been farming Pacific Oysters since 1984. Based at Dolphin Sands on the East Coast of Tasmania. Producing oysters in their farms in Great Oyster Bay and the Swan River. A culture of constant evolution to continue supplying a premium oyster experience.
Due to the farm’s isolation, production systems have been uniquely pioneered over the years. Long lines are used in Great Oyster Bay and traditional baskets and trays are used in Swan River. The Melshell Motto is to serve our customers, our staff and our natural world.
piermont
Piermont serves approachable dishes made with the freshest local produce within the 186 year old original Homestead.
Piermont works together with neighbouring farmers, local fishers and Tasmanian winemakers to deliver a constantly evolving, seasonally inspired menu that showcases the regions diversity of flavours
